Grade 5 French Immersion classes make TV debut

Today we were very excited to welcome Radio-Canada’s French TV show for kids: Oniva! who came to work with our Grade 5 French Immersion classes!

First, our game show contestants went into the gym to practice, along with our one student who was speaking about her favourite places in Beausejour.   Then we all got to join in on the fun, as audience members in the background.  The game show featured true / false questions about our episode's theme: volcanoes.  We got a real behind the scenes sneak peak into TV production, because, after the game show, the host read the questions again so that part could be filmed from another angle, where the audience was even more visible.  As well, even though the game show was over, the camera came around to everyone in the audience as we pretended to cheer for correct answers, show disappointment for incorrect answers & put on our own thinking faces for the questions.  Everyone from both classes was involved in filming, so it will be exciting to see how the finished product turns out!

During the second part of our day, Oniva took a few students at a time to the library for short interviews called Vox Pop.  Students talked in French about what they would name a volcano if they had the chance.  They also filmed interview answers that may appear in other episodes: one about their dream bike & a pair of questions about simple machines: which ones they use every day & how their life would be affected if the wheel disappeared tomorrow.  Students from St-Pierre-Jolys & Winnipeg will also be answering the same questions & will likely appear in the 3 episodes as well.  Five students from each of our classes participated in this segment.

At lunch, one of our students went out front of the school and welcomed the host, Louis, to our school.  She talked about her favourite places in Beausejour, en français.  Then they went into the school together for the game show.  Once this gets edited & put in order, it will end up being the first clip we see of our school & will make it seem like they ran straight into the gym from outside!

After filming at our school, the crew explored the town to get footage of the community that will also appear in the episode.

Our episode of Oniva will air on Radio-Canada (CBC French) on Sunday, February 1st at 9:45 a.m. It is available on regular television.  It will also be available to stream for free the next day on their website (search Oniva on your favourite search engine) as well as the ICI Tou.TV app.
